As part of our market research on India, we have been looking more closely at the Indian maritime fleet and one thing that caught our attention was the number of vessels registered under the Indian flag.
To put this into perspective, looking at vessels of 300 GT and above, the figures from January 2022 show:
India: 905 vessels
China: 5,203 vessels
Indonesia: 3,603 vessels
That means China had almost 6 times as many vessels under its national flag as India, while Indonesia had around 4 times as many. This raised an interesting question for us: why is the Indian-flagged fleet relatively small compared with other major Asian maritime nations?
India has a long coastline, a strong maritime presence, and a growing shipbuilding and ship repair industry. At the same time, a significant number of vessels connected to Indian shipping interests operate under foreign flags.
Indian shipping companies may consider a range of regulatory, operational and commercial factors when deciding where to register their vessels.
Understanding these factors could provide valuable insights into the structure of India's maritime fleet and the opportunities within its shipping and ship-management sectors.
This is another interesting finding emerging from our research into the Indian maritime market, and we look forward to exploring what is behind these numbers.
What do you think are the main factors influencing the choice of flag for Indian owned vessels?
