QUICK COURSE ON ANTI-FOULING
Shipsonic noticed that so many stories go around about how marine fouling happens and how ultrasonic systems can fight it. We identified a whole list of stories we heard. Then we put the list to our Director, Chiel de Wit. The result is a wonderful series of short videos giving you honest answers about this theme shrouded in myths and fantasy. The first 4 videos are here: Q1: Some claim that ultrasonic anti-fouling can clean a surface of marine growth. What is Shipsonicโs vi

This photo was taken during one of our recent installations. It shows how Shipsonicโs software can be installed and updated instantly. It also allows the client to reconfigure the system, if he has decided to add additional channels to our modular units. So far we have always been able to guide staff onboard to do this themselves since the software is very user friendly. For the nerds: Shipsonic uses embedded software. This means that our engineers design the combination of h

Some offer remote data collection and also remote adjustments of the system. What does Shipsonic do?

Here he discusses why Shipsonic doesn't provide all these frills, including remote control of the system. So the answer boils down to: remote connectivity is very hard on vessels, because the control units are deep down in the e

The Framfjord is a vessel of just 67 meters long. See photo 1 for aft of MV Framfjord in dock in Stettin. The Framfjord was designed for rapid emergency goods delivery all over the world. The Red Cross ordered the vessel to be built in 2006, in Croatia. It was small enough to offload in all types of ports and offloading locations, such as river mouths/estuaries. It has complete independent loading and offloading equipment on board. It was at the same time equipped to be as in

You appear to install larger transducers than your competition. Why?
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด - ๐ต - It is all about the OOMPF, the racket these transducers (also referred to as 'transponders') make. The more (ultrasonic) decibels you can bring into a seawater exposed surface, the more it vibrates and the better we can prevent biofilm and if there is no biofilm subsequently you cannot have mussel/barnacle/tubewurm infestations. Due to years of painstaking research Shipsonic

You read in some documents that specific ultrasonic frequencies kill specific fouling species. What is your experience with that?
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด - ๐ด - We see brochures or manuals from competitors stating that they have worked out which fouling organism gets killed at which ultrasonic frequency. That is a myth. Basically, ultrasonic sound cannot even kill any organism, it can only prevent biofilm from settling.

Some say that certain sea life responds to specific sound frequencies. What is your experience with that?
They actually have hearing for lower frequencies than humans. Some sea mammals - dolphins, whales - do actually hear the high frequency sounds. Shipsonic is going to participate in a research to measure how much of its systems' sound travels - how far away from a vessel can how many decibels be registered? We should have answers in about a

Some say ultrasonic sound gives cavitation - does your USAF work through cavitation?
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด - ๐ฒ - A very persistent myth that goes around: ultrasonic anti-fouling cleans or removes fouling with cavitation. Cavitation is basically an extremely powerful cleaning comparable to sand-blasting - very destructive.

Other companies glue their ultrasonic transducers. Why doesn't Shipsonic glue?
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด - ๐ฑ - Well, it is by now no secret: glue and the sea environment are not a good match. Even the sturdiest, two-component, costly glues have a limited working life in a vessel. To boot, the constant high Sound Pressure Level is also a huge challenge for the glue. Several of our installations took place on vessels where we needed to remove our friends' systems, with transducers hang

Some specify how many square meters of hull one of their transducers can keep clean. What does Shipsonic say when asked?
These weeks Shipsonic receives every day a new inquiry 'can you do hulls?'. Mostly the next question is 'how many transducers are needed for a vessel of .... meter?' Please listen to the video and hear that the right answer is 'it depends'. #hull #energyefficiency #biofouling #USAF

So what is then the role of biofilm in fouling?
๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด - ๐ฏ - In yesterday's video you heard Chiel de Wit explain that fouling species do NOT eat biofilm. Today he will make it clear why biofilm is playing such a large role in the two-stage fouling process. Listen carefully. It might save your company millions of euros : less cleaning, no more recoating coolers, no replacement of coolers, etc. etc. Indeed, it will also save you some fu

Some claim that mussels, barnacles and other macro-fouling eat biofilm. What do you think about that?
Demystifying ultrasonic anti-fouling - Chiel de Wit explains all there is to know. ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ป๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ต ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐น๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐๐ถ-๐ณ๐ผ๐๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด - ๐ฎ - Marine Growth appears to be the talk of the town. The Wilson ASA Plymouth was in Willebroek - look it up on the map, it is way, way into Belgium's heartland, between Antwerp and Brussels. Never imagined that a seagoing bulk carrier could be off-loaded so far inland. The Plymouth has our system on board. Shipsonic received a message: 'the control unit has a flashing red light'. The crew explained that two transducers hadn't been installed. We decided to go and have a look. Why were the transducers not installed? How to solve

Shipsonic competes well with ultrasonic anti-fouling competitors (๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ for the in-crowd). We reckon we have 5 important features the competitors lack. Now, I am only going to share you one of these โ you donโt want to give too many ideas. Yesterday, Shipsonic's team visited Dethon (who assemble our units). It was wonderful to see many and many of our competitive advantages standing ready for packing. There they were shining, with sharp edges: our

A simple graphic, a powerful message.
What a great graphic. So clearly and accessibly explained. Well done Selamawit Alemayehu! Shipsonic particularly hopes that the graphic makes it clear that we are more than box-coolers. Here you can access our brochure on 'non-boxcooler applications' https://lnkd.in/dqkt4Hr4. Basically, if you need to prevent fouling on any seawater exposed part, get in touch. We will assess honestly if we can keep it clean - we will also make it clear if other solutions are more appropriate

This wonderful building full of curved shapes, suits our Travel Transducer very well. Shipsonic may not design iconic buildings, we definitely designed something that works very well on round surfaces. If you want to protect your water intake pipe, we only need you to send us the outer diameter (or the outer circumference) of the pipe and we will custom-make the installation rings and the transducer, to exactly fit seemlessly on your curvy parts. It can be on your bow (stern)
