Last weekย Shipsonicย Director,ย Chiel de Wit, and Business Development Officer,ย Anne Marie van Swinderen, attended PortPIC byย VB conferences COMPIT HullPIC HIPER PortPIC. PortPIC is an interesting institution. A conference where all participants attend all the sessions, with very active participation and good discussions. But the most exciting is this: no promotory, self-inflating presentations. You barely are allowed to put your logo on your slide-show. All this is managed with passion (and strictness) by Volker Bertram, who I think is the one who had the idea for this.

Basically some 60 super-motivated people in one room, listening to a total of 20+ papers over two days.ย

Our own Anne Marie presented her paper โ€˜Controlling Biofouling on Stationary Vesselsโ€™. The essence of the paper is this: the biofouling solutions that are currently in use are less effective on stationary vessels. In case of box-coolers it is a problem when the engine is cold and the thermosiphon working stops. Laying up with the engine running is not the problem, being stationary or moving with engine off ๐—ถ๐˜€ the problem. In case of hulls, across practically all coatings (possibly apart from the most virulently poisonous ones) a stationary vessel will grow over, unless it is just laying still for a very short time.

For ultrasonic anti-fouling the working principle is completely different. It works as well on stationary as moving vessels. The working is as effective with a cold engine as with an engine in operation.
