Forย Shipsonic, if a system doesnโt work fully it doesnโt work at all. We work closely with mussel farming experts. They can tell you how hard it is to grow mussels, which means that mussel fouling is something that often wonโt happen at all. For mussels to grow, the circumstances must be โjust rightโ. Mussels only have a short window to settle. Maybe two weeks in their life time they transition from a swimming larva by growing a foot and then get one chance to attach their foot in a place with biofilm. That place cannot be less than 5 meters and not more than 25 meters deep. Once they have settled there must be enough water circulation, sufficient and the right type of food (mussels are filter-feeders), etc, for them to grow properly.ย
In short, if your vessel stayed clean, it can very well be that there simply wasnโt any mussel infection.
Thatโs why Shipsonic has done its tests on plates that were purposefully infected. Each basin (treatments and references) received a whopping 500,000 larvae. After the infection, the mussels were then offered all the ideal circumstances to grow (the right temperatures, the right water circulation, the right algae to eat), as they would have in professional mussel farming. In those growth inducing circumstances, our system delivered virtually clean plates. On Shipsonic treated plates, there were only very small lines of settled mussel larvae exactly at the line where the water and the air meets and where the ultrasonic vibration probably hadnโt reached properly. The reference plates had 50 times more mussels on them. Where Shipsonic had just 20 mussel larvae, the reference had 1000. Not only for one season, but also for the next year, and the year after that. As long as the ultrasonic anti-fouling system is constantly on.
